#88 Cicada!

It’s that time of year again.  Every summer during late July or so, it dawns on the average New Jersey resident…it’s loud out here!  That crazy wall of noise is the cicada.  And from time to time you will find their husks on trees and other things.

It’s especially creepy that their husks look like actual bugs, but they are not.  In a nutshell, that husk is the larval stage of the bug.  It lives underground for most of its life, and then it burrows out, lands on a tree or some such and then emerges out of that husk as a big green bug.

If you’re interested in more details, check out the Wikipedia site which has audio clips and a cool video of a cicada coming out of its husk!
